About Integrated Masters - Master of Engineering (MEng) - Civil Engineering

Combining the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree with Masters-level material, the MEng Civil Engineering programme allows learners to further distinguish themselves with an advanced set of professional and technical skills. An MEng also removes the need to source further funding to study a Master's. On completion, students will be better placed to compete in the graduate jobs market and enter more demanding and rewarding roles.

On this MEng Civil Engineering course, learners will study core topics such as mathematics, structures, materials, geotechnics, hydraulics and surveying. Threads of design, sustainability, health and safety, and professionalism are also embedded in the course. They'll learn how to use industry-standard software for the design and construction of civil engineering projects.

Students will have to complete their dissertation which enables them to tailor their qualification to the area of industry they want to work in. USW's strong links with the civil engineering profession mean learners will have opportunities for site visits, industrial placements and practitioner mentoring. In recent years, students have travelled to Beijing to visit the Olympic structures, the Great Wall of China, and the China International Exhibition of Building Materials and Green Construction.

This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Permanent Way Institution on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

USW's Civil Engineering lecturers are experts in their subject areas, having worked in, or with, industry, conducting research, presenting at conferences, publishing their work, and informing studies with the latest insights. Not only will students be taught by academics who are specialists in their fields, but they'll also benefit from guest speakers from the engineering world. Students will learn through lectures, which are supported by tutorials, practical sessions and seminar groups.

Graduates of MEng Civil Engineering degree secure work with consulting engineers, civil engineering contractors and local authorities, with a range of companies that include Capita Symonds, BAM Nuttall, Hyder Consulting, Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, Morgan Est, Carillion, Mott MacDonald, Atkins, Network Rail, United Utilities, and various international companies. Graduates can also progress to a PhD or research degree.
