About Master of Science - Civil Engineering (Structural)
The MSc Civil Engineering programme is students' opportunity to establish or consolidate their career as a Civil Engineer. Their engineering studies will develop the critical and analytical skills, and management expertise needed to manage civil engineering projects and implement sustainable solutions.
As well as developing analytical and problem-solving skills, tuition covers project planning and management. The MSc Civil Engineering course is also underpinned by research into areas such as the use of novel and sustainable materials, geotechnics, and structural modelling.
The Structural Pathway allows students to develop advanced understanding of structural mechanics to solve engineering problems, including seismic and finite element analysis. They'll also develop design techniques for Timber and Masonry construction and embodied carbon assessment.
This master's degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Permanent Way Institution on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the academic requirement for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). To hold accredited qualifications for CEng registration, candidates must also hold a Bachelor (Hons) degree that has been accredited as partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Students will learn through lectures, tutorials, and seminars, as well as guest lectures and seminars with prominent industry experts. They'll also complete a research dissertation on a chosen topic of interest using USW's excellent laboratory facilities and specialist support.
On completion of this MSc Civil Engineering (Structural) course, students will be able to develop a career as civil engineers, technical managers, or research and development managers. These roles can be with leading international consultancies, contractors, national and local consulting companies, as well as international research and government organizations. Graduates may also progress to an engineering research degree.
