About Foundation Studies Program (Standard) - Business (X0F:2) (0100808) + Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology - Artificial Intelligence (93J) (102705G)

Program Description

Foundation Studies Program (Standard) - Business (X0F:2) (0100808):
The Foundation Studies program is a direct academic pathway to first-year undergraduate degree study, or an equivalent. The program acts as a bridging course for international students who wish to study a university undergraduate degree course but who don’t yet meet academic requirements and/or have the English language skills for tertiary study.

To successfully complete the program, students must achieve a 50% pass in all units, including English.

Upon successful completion of the course, graduates can enter one of the University of Tasmania’s undergraduate degree courses.

Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology - Artificial Intelligence (93J):
Studying a degree in Business will give students the knowledge and skills to take their passion and develop it into a career. Students can use the University of Tasmania’s connections with local industry to get a real-world advantage during their studies.

The Bachelor of Business is an accredited course of study. The aim is to enable students to critically apply routine discipline knowledge, while understanding the theoretical underpinnings, and to clearly communicate discipline advice and ideas. Students develop skills in problem solving and decision making for straight forward situations in practice, using social, ethical, economic, regulatory, and global perspectives. Bachelor of Business graduates will be able to contribute to their profession and to society within a culture of independent lifelong learning. The Bachelor of Business provides the opportunity for graduates to acquire an understanding of business and to develop a coherent body of knowledge in various majors, which will allow them to meet the entry requirements necessary for associate membership of the relevant professional bodies.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Business will be able to:
  • Acquire and apply discipline specific knowledge and skills related to business and organisations (Discipline Knowledge).
  • Communicate information effectively in written and oral forms with a diverse range of stakeholders (Communication Skills).
  • Apply critical and analytical skills to the identification and evaluation of complex business problems and draw logical conclusions (Critical Skills).
  • Work both independently and collaboratively to achieve agreed team outcomes (Teamwork).
With a focus on providing students with the skills to compete for employment in the ICT industry globally, a Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology (BICT) gives them the knowledge and ability to stand out in the constantly changing technology landscape.

The BICT is a specialist degree with both a theoretical and practical focus. It develops technological understanding and skills that are in high demand world-wide, plus builds project management and other business soft-skills that make students an ICT professional.

Students will develop knowledge and capabilities in communication, design, development and management and learn what it takes to implement and integrate ICT within an organisation. Students will also complete a hands-on project that gives them real-world experience before they even start their career.

Students will graduate with the skills and knowledge to grow into leadership positions; the drive to act on entrepreneurial ambition; and the confidence to pursue research and graduate studies.

The BICT offers core knowledge and specialist units across the complete spectrum of computing and information technology. They range from non-technical areas such as the nature of information and the organisational need for ICT; to the hardware, software, network and creative technologies used to satisfy these needs; to the communication, design, development and management skills needed to create and implement ICT components.

In addition, students will be provided with the organisational skills needed to work within a business environment, including working as a team and independently; developing user-centred solutions; communicating effectively; problem-solving; community and social awareness; professional conduct; and industry best practice.

Students will graduate with the abilities and skills to:
  1. Employ the interpersonal skills of teamwork, initiative and working independently in order to effectively communicate to a range of stakeholders in ICT professional practice.
  2. Manage secure data, information and knowledge by selecting, adapting and applying ICT processes, techniques and tools.
  3. Analyse and evaluate the efficacy of ICT services, systems, processes or products cognisant of economic, social, legal, and ethical factors and consequences for individuals, organisations, and society.
  4. Incorporate best practice and ICT industry standards and adhere to codes of professional conduct and practice when applying knowledge of ICT principles, processes, methodologies, research skills, tools, and techniques.
  5. Construct efficient solutions in their area of specialization through determining the user requirements and exercising computational, creative and critical thinking.
This major provides an opportunity to develop skills in the rapidly evolving fields of artificial intelligence and internet of things. It focuses on how to leverage connected devices and manipulate the gathered data.
