Program Description
Foundation Studies Program (Standard) - Life Science (X0F:4) (0100808):
The Foundation Studies program is a direct academic pathway to first-year undergraduate degree study, or an equivalent. The program acts as a bridging course for international students who wish to study a university undergraduate degree course but who don’t yet meet academic requirements and/or have the English language skills for tertiary study.
To successfully complete the program, students must achieve a 50% pass in all units, including English.
Upon successful completion of the course, graduates can enter one of the University of Tasmania’s undergraduate degree courses.
Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology and Bachelor of Science - Cyber Security (93H):
The double degree allows students to deepen their knowledge and expertise within two separate study areas. This means students can choose from University of Tasmania’s range of exciting, diverse courses and they can embark on a journey as unique as they are.
The University of Tasmania’s science degree provides students with a foundation of core skills in science, analysis, and rational thinking. They have options to focus their studies in one or more scientific disciplines and learn the methods to apply their skills and knowledge to the practical needs of industry, business, and government in both scientific and non-scientific roles.
The BICT is a specialist degree with both a theoretical and practical focus. It develops technological understanding and skills that are in high demand world-wide, plus builds project management and other business soft-skills that make students an ICT professional.
The highly connected world everyone live in is filled with threats to their systems and devices. Cyber security will enable students to get a foundational understanding of these risks, including the fundamentals of encryption systems, penetration testing, and eForensics, and how to respond to protect businesses and systems of various sizes.
Students get an opportunity to learn:
- Programming Fundamentals will provide students with an overview of programming and its role in problem-solving, and strategies for designing solutions to programming problems with reference to the Java programming language.
- Cyber Security and Ethical Hacking gives an introduction to the risks and threats to computer systems and some of the countermeasures that can be put in place to minimise them.
- Server Administration and Security Assurance will provide students with a general introduction to system administration, and is comprised of four modules that explore the role of an administrator in modern business settings. The four modules cover Unix administration, Windows administration, web and database.
- Advanced Cyber Security and eForensics deals with management issues encountered as a result of deploying security countermeasures, policy and initiatives in organisational settings. This unit provides the capstone experience for the Cyber Security major.
