About Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) - Physiology and Pharmacology (ESM)

Program Description

Medical Sciences is a "first-entry" program into the Faculty of Science at Western. High school students interested in studying the basic medical sciences (human biology) modules at an advanced level in the BMSc Program should select MEDICAL SCIENCES on the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC). Admission to Medical Sciences is not admission to the BMSc Program. Students are registered as Medical Sciences students in Years 1 and 2, and apply to the BMSc Program when they enter Year 3. Entry into the BMSc Program is competitive and limited but admission is assured for Medical Sciences 2 students who achieve a minimum average of 80%, with no mark less than 60%, in the Year 2 courses that are specific to the student's module of interest for Year 3 BMSc.

The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology is the largest research-based medical science department in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University. There are currently over 84 associated faculty members, 80 graduate students, 40 postdoctoral fellows, and 45 departmental and research staff in the department. The range of expertise and facilities associated with the Department is truly impressive. A distinctive strength of the Department, and of the disciplines Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, is the comprehensive focus on biological processes from the cellular-molecular level to the integrative-systemic level, and on the effects of drugs and environmental agents on these processes.

Western's areas of research excellence include the physiology and pharmacology of the cardiovascular, neural, reproductive, endocrine and musculoskeletal systems. Several faculty work in the area of developmental biology related to these organ systems. Faculty members in this Department are leaders in nationally-funded collaborative research programs studying skeletal / bone development and biology, heart and vascular biology, cell communication and gap junctions, neural control of vision and movement, and osteoarthritis and pain. Funding from several large infrastructure grants from both national and provincial governments has facilitated the development of state-of-the-art research laboratories and core facilities.

NOTE: Please note the English scores listed are minimum requirements. Meeting the minimums does not guarantee admission. Students with low English scores may be admitted to the English BOOST Program, a 9 week training program for conditional admission to their chosen program.
