About Bachelor of Laws - Law with foundation year
This Law degree will enable students to progress to the vocational stage of lawyer’s training, to qualify as either a solicitor or barrister. This original and innovative course has been designed in consultation with senior managers to give students both a theoretical and practical experience.
The University is one of only a few universities across the country which offers a dual qualification: an LLB and Membership of the National Association of Licensed Paralegals (provided students choose specific module options), which means they graduate with a GradNALP in addition to their LLB enjoying Paralegal status.
As part of this degree, students will have the option to get involved with practical justice including opportunities to shadow a local judge and experience live mediations from the in-house Medication Clinic. Through strong links with the local community, Citizens Advice, and local courts, students will have the opportunity to act as a Community Legal Companion for unrepresented parties at court. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on work experience in a legal setting.
In addition to all the LLB degrees being Qualifying Law Degrees, students have designed the degrees in consultation with external stakeholders, such as local law practitioners as well as a range of local organisations. This ensures the University help students to develop the skills which are highly valued by employers, with examples including written and verbal communication, initiative, time management, flexibility and teamwork. Many graduates use these skills to become a barrister or solicitor, but others establish careers in education, public services, HRM, management, as paralegals, chartered secretaries or in financial services. This qualification can also be used to progress on to postgraduate study in law, such as an LLM, or in related areas such as management, marketing and accountancy.
