About Master of Science - Compound Semiconductor Physics
The MSc Compound Semiconductor Physics program has been designed to provide comprehensive training and practical experience in compound semiconductor theory, fabrication, applications, and integration with silicon technology. The program is jointly delivered by the School of Physics and Astronomy and the Institute for Compound Semiconductors (ICS). The ICS is a cutting-edge development in compound semiconductor technology and is a founding member of the Compound Semiconductor Cluster, which includes companies like IQE plc, SPTS, and Newport Wafer Fab. The aim of the Institute is to capitalize on the existing expertise at Cardiff University and accelerate the introduction of academic research into the production environment. It is a unique facility in the UK and strives to become a global hub for compound semiconductor technology research, development, and innovation.
The curriculum of the program is flexible and includes a robust set of required modules, as well as cutting-edge elective modules that incorporate the most effective teaching and learning techniques. These elective modules cover the latest results, innovations, and techniques in the field.
As part of the course, students will undertake a 3-month summer project, which can be based in the School of Physics and Astronomy, within the ICS, or in placement with one of the program's industrial partners. The program has strong, long-established industrial links with companies like IQE, allowing students to engage in theoretical, practical, fabrication, and applications-centered projects in both academic and industrial placement environments. This unique opportunity sets Cardiff University apart from other Russell Group universities in this field.
