The Department of French Studies collaborates with the Center for French and Francophone Studies to position the Louisiana State University French program as a leader in the study of French and Francophone literatures, language, and cultures. Recognizing this excellence, the French Embassy to the United States has designated the CFFS as a center of excellence, a distinction awarded to only 15 university French programs in the country. Our research, scholarship, and teaching emphasize the historical importance of Francophone languages and cultures in Louisiana, as well as the influential role of French studies in the European intellectual tradition.
Our undergraduate courses cover the entire spectrum of French literature and culture, from medieval epics to contemporary works in prose, poetry, philosophy, theater, and film. We also offer courses on Francophone literatures and cultures from regions such as North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, and North America, including Quebec and Louisiana. The faculty’s diverse research interests span various theoretical perspectives, promoting interdisciplinary studies in literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis, feminism, gender theory, semiotics, post-structuralism, and the visual arts. Additionally, our linguistics faculty members teach courses and conduct research in areas such as phonetics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, second-language acquisition, and the unique linguistic variations found in Louisiana.
The Bachelor of Arts in French with a concentration in Secondary Education equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to become French teachers at secondary schools.
