Students enrolled in the Academic Accelerator Program will benefit from:
  • Tailored support for academic and English language needs
  • A full year’s worth of college credits
  • Access to courses specifically for international students
  • Assistance with English vocabulary relevant to their classes
  • A diverse mix of classes with both international and U.S. students
The Department of French Studies collaborates with the Center for French and Francophone Studies, a closely related independent unit, to position the Louisiana State University French program as a leader in the study of French and Francophone literatures, language, and cultures. Recognizing these efforts, the French Embassy to the United States has designated the CFFS as a center of excellence, a distinction awarded to only 15 university French programs in the U.S. The research, scholarship, and instruction at our department reflect the historical importance of Francophone languages and cultures in Louisiana, as well as the influential role of French studies in the European intellectual tradition.

Our undergraduate courses cover a wide range of topics, spanning the entire history of French literature and culture from medieval epic to contemporary works. We also offer courses on Francophone literatures and cultures from various regions including North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, and North America. The faculty’s diverse research interests encompass literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis, feminism, gender theory, and more, promoting interdisciplinary study. Additionally, our linguistics faculty members focus on phonetics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, and other language-related areas.

The Secondary Education concentration within the Bachelor of Arts in French program equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to become French teachers at secondary schools.
