About Academic Accelerator - Bachelor of Arts - Geography - Disaster Science and Management
The Academic Accelerator Program (AAP) is a balanced first-year program designed for international students with strong English-language skills. It complements immersive classes taught in English with appropriate support.
Students in the Academic Accelerator Program will receive:
- Tailored support for academic and English-speaking requirements
- A full year’s worth of college credits
- Access to courses specifically for international students
- Assistance with English vocabulary essential for classes
- A mix of classes with both international and U.S. students
The Disaster Science and Management (DSM) Program at Louisiana State University is housed within the Department of Geography and Anthropology. Undergraduate students can enroll in the Department to pursue a B.A. or B.S. degree in Geography with a concentration in Disaster Science and Management.
Participation in the Disaster Science and Management program allows students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the impact of disasters on the natural, built, and human environment. It equips students with the knowledge to develop effective strategies for planning, mitigating, responding to, and recovering from disasters. Students have the opportunity to engage in community service-learning projects, volunteer work, internships, and discussions with professionals in various fields related to disaster management.
The Disaster Science and Management Program prepares students for careers in the public, not-for-profit, or private sectors, as well as for further study in graduate programs. Students learn to:
- Understand the impact of natural and human-caused hazards on environmental, social, cultural, political, and economic systems
- Develop strategies for disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery across different sectors
- Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to policy formulation and implementation in disaster management
- Communicate effectively about local, national, and global issues in disaster management
- Through DSMA, the Disaster Science and Management student organization, students can access training and career-building activities to enhance their professional development.
