The School of Nutrition and Food Sciences at LSU offers a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food Sciences. The undergraduate program curriculum combines the curricula of Nutritional Sciences and Food Science and Technology. Students in this program take core courses that provide the basic knowledge needed for specialization in one of four areas of concentration:
Dietetics
Nutritional Sciences/Pre-Medical
Nutrition, Health and Society
Food Science and Technology
Each concentration offers a professional sequence in a specialized area, along with supporting courses in basic sciences and a broad general education. Graduates are prepared for careers in dietetics, medicine, public health, education, research, or the food industry.
The Dietetics concentration at LSU is accredited as a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Students who successfully complete this program can apply for an ACEND accredited dietetic internship, which is required to become a registered dietitian (RD). Registered dietitians provide expertise in nutrition and food service management in various settings. Students who complete the knowledge requirements of the dietetics concentration but do not complete a dietetic internship can become a dietetic technician, registered (DTR) by passing the examination.
