About Bachelor of Fine Arts - Fashion Design

At Marist College, Fashion Design is much more than a major – it’s a hands-on, immersive learning experience. By absorbing the theories and history of design and applying it to real-world fashion design from students' first semester at Marist College, they will be well-prepared for a successful career in the Fashion Design industry.

The Fashion Design major relies upon foundational courses such as Fashion in Culture and Commerce and Creative Process, then is augmented by a combination of technical and creative design courses to create a well-balanced curriculum. Students will develop skills in design, textiles, draping and flat pattern making, garment construction, and computer-aided design, and event present their own apparel collection at the annual Silver Needle Runway Fashion Show. Fashion Designs majors also have minors available to them in Fashion Merchandising and Product Development.

Upon graduation, students in the Fashion Design program will be able to:
  • Demonstrate innovation and integrate creative thinking throughout the design process.
  • Incorporate proficiency in skills, tools, and technology, as they apply to the creation, reproduction and distribution of creative outcomes that relate to the fashion industry.
  • Engage in conceptual and critical thinking while integrating research processes applicable to the fashion industry.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills as required in the fashion industry through a variety of professional methods, including visual, oral, and written forms.
  • Integrate problem solving abilities: understanding and identifying solutions to areas of impact like sustainability, social justice, diversity, and inclusion in the fashion industry.
