About Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Hair and Make-Up for Screen and Film

Throughout this course, working as part of a wider film crew, students will gain a clear understanding of the hair and make-up department’s role in productions of all sizes. A network of valuable contacts will be built as students progress from education into a professional career.

The course will be delivered by experienced industry professionals who combine teaching with current professional practice. A range of optional specialist modules will be available to cater to specific areas of interest, such as SFX make-up, period hair and make-up, and prosthetics.

Additionally, students will gain a firm grasp of the fundamentals of hair and make-up and understand the roles and relationships within the hair and make-up department. By year three, creative skills can be applied to inform an in-depth personal design project, culminating in the development and production of a final live film in collaboration with fellow students.

Graduates can progress directly to a career in the film industry, specifically in areas such as hair and make-up for feature films, television, corporate advertising, music videos, fashion, and the creative industries.

Why Take the Course?

  • Practical: The BA (Hons) Hair and Makeup for Screen and Film degree offers a hands-on approach to learning, combining traditional hair styling and makeup techniques with contemporary practices in a dynamic film school environment. Throughout the course, students will work on live film projects and dedicated studio sessions, collaborating with peers from other film-related disciplines such as Filmmaking, Film Business, and Production Design. This collaboration ensures real-world experience and the development of a network that supports the transition into the industry.
  • Comprehensive: The course provides a thorough education in hair and makeup artistry, preparing students for successful careers in film, television, and related industries. Designed in collaboration with industry professionals, the curriculum covers a wide range of relevant skills. From basic hair styling and makeup application in the first year to more advanced techniques such as special effects makeup, wig making, and prosthetic design in later years, the course covers all aspects of hair and makeup for screen and film.
  • Industry-facing: Education is delivered by both educators and industry specialists who bring professional experience into the classroom. The course maintains strong ties with the industry, ensuring that the education provided is current and aligned with professional standards. Regular guest lectures and workshops with professional hair and makeup artists offer insights into the industry and keep students updated on the latest trends and techniques. Additionally, MetFilm School's dedicated industry team assists in securing work placements, enhancing employability upon graduation.
  • Real-life Experience: Throughout the course, students will engage in speculative and live film projects, applying skills in real-world scenarios. In the final year, focus shifts to a chosen speciality, such as key hair styling, special effects makeup, or wig making. The work culminates in a personal studio-based project and live work on graduate films. This experience, along with the portfolio developed, positions students strongly for entering the industry.
