Program Description

Employers in every field – from education to business, social services to health care – seek out people who have special insights into human behavior. At ONU, they'll expose students to many possible career paths and help them find one they're passionate about.

As psychology majors, students may choose to focus their studies on general psychology, clinical/counseling or behavioral neuroscience. Each course of study combines rigorous coursework with extensive research experience. Students will work side-by-side with professors in the lab designing and conducting experiments. They’ll develop essential skills in leadership, teamwork, communication and critical thinking.

The clinical/counseling concentration is designed for students who are interested in a career helping people from diverse backgrounds who are experiencing life stress and mental health concerns. Students will learn about psychological theories; careers in mental health care; and psychological disorders. They will develop skills to communicate effectively with others and delve deeper into multicultural issues. Courses including Psychology of Personality; Introduction to Clinical Psychology; Abnormal Psychology; Child Psychology; and Multicultural Psychology. In addition, students will have the opportunity to assist ONU professors with innovative research in the areas of multicultural psychology and developmental psychopathology. This concentration is best suited for students who want to pursue a graduate degree in social work, clinical psychology, or counseling. After graduate school, students often pursue careers as therapists or psychologists.
