The University provides a high-quality research and training environment for more than 500 scientists and clinicians.

The goal is to improve the understanding of the mechanisms of disease to address important health problems and to deliver practical solutions leading to health improvement for individuals, communities, and populations. Working together university aim to translate research between the laboratory and the clinic, with fundamental research themes being informed by important clinical problems.

The research strategy is strongly informed by the close working relationship with NHS Tayside, and this partnership is driving the development of the Tayside Academic Health Science Network, which will impact local, national, and international healthcare delivery and improvement.

The university's activities include collaborations at local, national, and international levels and the university receives funding from various sources including UK research councils, and medical charities.The universities also have strong links with major pharmaceutical companies, and contribute to funding applied research.
