About Bachelor of Science - Equestrian Studies - Western Riding/Training Emphasis

Program Description

Findlay's Equestrian Studies program utilizes a hands-on approach to learning, designed to give students the most practical experience that will translate to success in the equestrian industry. The first year in the University of Findlay Western Equestrian Program is designed to serve as an introduction to the breadth and variety of the equine industry. Beginning with rider position and equitation, students will use that foundation to continue throughout the year moving on to both training techniques and introducing several disciplines. Students will rotate through several broke University-owned horses, in addition to teaching showmanship to a green horse.

As students continue into their second year in the Western Equestrian Program, they are provided the opportunity to train an unbroke colt. Staff will guide them through the fundamentals of the training process while allowing them the opportunity to begin to develop their own riding program. Students also have the chance to experience working with a 'client' through Findlay's Send Your Horse to College(SYHC) program. The SYHC program invites horse owners to send their horses to Findlay's campus to be trained over the course of the academic year.

The third year of the Western Equestrian program helps to develop you into a well-rounded and diversely capable horseman. In the fourth and culminating year in the Western Equestrian program at UF students find their focus, both at the barn and for their future. Senior year is designed to prepare students for the next stage of their life, with rigorous riding expectations, lectures given on industry and association standards, and interview/resume guidance.
