About International First Year Diploma - Science (X1D:3) (0100205) + Bachelor of Science - Ocean Conservation and Industries (P3O) (002059J)
Program Description
International First Year Diploma - Science (X1D:1) (0100205):
The University of Tasmania International First Year Diploma – Science program has been developed to meet the needs of students who are academically capable of undertaking undergraduate study at university but require extra Academic English language support in their first year. Students will also benefit from a targeted introduction to academic, cultural, social and practical aspects of study at the University of Tasmania which may differ from the diverse international backgrounds they come from.
The Course is designed to allow students to meet the prerequisite knowledge and skills required for direct entry into second year Science undergraduate degrees at the University of Tasmania. Students will study eight units at first year undergraduate level. In addition to three compulsory units (Academic English, Data Handling and Statistics and Understanding Science), students will choose five elective units (two units for a discipline major, two units for a discipline minor and one unit as a degree elective). Four units are studied each semester over two semesters giving a total of eight units.
Learning Outcomes:
- To demonstrate a coherent understanding of a discipline’s first year undergraduate level through identifying, describing and explaining foundational theories, concepts, principles, models and processes.
- To critically apply this understanding to routine and relevant problems and settings and to make subsequent interpretations and recommendations.
- To demonstrate intellectual independence, impartiality and sound judgement within general academic and specific disciplinary ethical and legal frameworks.
- To effectively communicate ideas and findings to specialist and non-specialist audiences in written and oral formats using appropriate conventions and logical development supported with evidence and research.
Bachelor of Science - Ocean Conservation and Industries (P3O):
The University of Tasmania’s science degree provides students with a foundation of core skills in science, analysis, and rational thinking. They have options to focus their study in one or more scientific disciplines and learn the methods to apply their skills and knowledge to the practical needs of industry, business, and government in both scientific and non-scientific roles.
In choosing a Bachelor of Science students can:
- Select one or two science majors from the University of Tasmania's 21 exciting options, plus expand their educational experience and study units of their choice from across the University.
- Explore a range of study options through their choice of electives, discovering potential new areas of interest even after they start studying.
- Learn through hands-on practical experience including laboratory work, field trips, field-based units, and research projects.
- Enjoy being mentored by highly qualified staff, many of whom are national and world leaders in their field.
