French is the official language of 33 countries and is widely spoken in at least 10 more. It is of only two languages spoken on five continents and is spoken by about 500 million people around the world (125 million native speakers). It is the second language of the Internet, and the second most influential language in the world (Language Today). It is one of the two official working languages of the United Nations, NATO, the Olympic Games, the International Red Cross, the International Monetary Fund, and the 31-member Council of Europe. Learning French also creates career opportunities. One thousand French Companies operate in the U.S., employing 650,000 Americans, while a similar number of U.S. companies have operations in France.
