Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Sociology with foundation year

Sociology is a fascinating subject that investigates the ways in which social life is organised, structured and experienced. On this course students will study a wide range of topics including social class and poverty, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, crime and deviance, families, social order and social change.

This degree is designed to develop students 'sociological imagination' a transferable critical and analytical capacity that is valued by employers. The foundation year provides students with the fundamental skills and abilities to be able to study at university level. On successful completion of this foundation year they can progress to the Sociology degree.

As students immerse themselves in sociology, they'll acquire a broad ranging and deep understanding of society, and of how everyday life connects to wider social issues. Students will also explore how sociological knowledge is grounded in robust theory and research methods.

Through interactive teaching and the commitment to personal tutoring, students work hard to produce a vibrant, supportive and inclusive learning community so that they have every opportunity to reach their full potential.

Whether students already have a particular career in mind or they want to study sociology purely for their passion for the subject, this course will inspire students to look at sociology from a different perspective and help them gain the transferable skills needed for employment or further study. In the foundation year, students will study core concepts, theories and issues in the social sciences including subjects such as gender, race and class. These modules are studied alongside a study skills programme which will prepare students for studying at degree level.
